Its difficult to know where to start with a game that had so much high quality football. We knew before kick off what Linby were all about and there standard of play certainly raised our game. Having struggled over the last few weeks to find our form we finally showed how good a side we can be.
The match started at a very high tempo with both sides playing some lovely flowing football. Having put out a side to try and combat the Linby attack the formation worked really well early on with Woodlands forcing some early pressure. From a corner early in the game Woodlands found themselves 1-0 up when a corner wasn’t cleared and Katie M drove the ball back into the danger area only to see it take a wicked deflection off a Linby player. Both teams then further raised their games, and the game was stretched from end to end with both teams creating chances but without troubling the keepers.
Towards the end of the half with the girls playing down the slope, Woodlands created four clear chances on goal but failed to convert any of these, which later proved very costly.
The second half started off exactly as the first had finished with some great football from both teams. Having latched onto a through ball on the halfway line, Robyn sprinted clear to smash the ball past the Linby keeper to make the score 2-0. Unsurprisingly the Linby bench looked for a reaction from their side and they got it midway through the half when an inch perfect through ball found the Linby striker who coolly stroked it home for 2-1.
Again Woodlands went on the offensive and squandered several more chance to put the game out of site. Linby then had a corner, which caused confusion in the Woodlands box and was eventually turned in for an own goal. From the sidelines it looked as though this would knock the stuffing out of Woodlands but not a bit of it, they mounted more attacks and were unlucky not to take the lead again. But as the girls know Linby were always going to be dangerous right up to the final whistle and so it proved, from another ball over the top the Linby striker took the ball down, rounded the keeper and rolled the ball home to pinch the result.
Having given it their all the Woodlands players should be extremely proud of the way they played against a team who have already had a season at 11 a side. They acquitted themselves very well and gave Linby one hell of a fright.
Many thanks to Linby for such a great game of football played in the right way and in the right spirit.
