A great result today girls, against another very good footballing side. Having been beaten comprehensively at their ground, it was clear from the first whistle, that you wanted to get even. Since the defeat to Nottingham Utd away, where we were poor and they deserved the win, we have made quite a few changes to the way we play and it has made us much harder to beat.
The game got underway with both teams fighting to get a foothold and create the first chance, this came Katie’s way but screwed her shot wide of the post. Shortly after though, a great run from Robyn down the right wing, saw her flash the cross in front of the keeper and Emily, only to see Lucy W place the ball low into the corner to open the scoring. With the confidence of taking the lead, Woodlands started to string some passes together and a defence splitting pass from Emily, put Katie M clean through, who coolly slotted past a very good keeper. More pressure after the re-start then led to a long kick down field from Annie, which was turned inside for Emily, who looked up and stroked home an unstoppable shot into the corner of the net.
The second half was always going to be a battle, as Nottingham Utd scrapped to get back into the game. Woodlands still pressed and created chances but were mainly on the back foot and soaking up pressure. Struggling to close the ball down, the ball broke free on the edge of the area and was driven towards the goal but the impressive Annie in the woodlands goal could not keep it out 3-1.
The nerves then swept through the side and before long, Nottingham had a second, with an unstoppable drive, to make the score 3-2. Having made a few changes, the girls started to believe again and pressed for a fourth. From a leftwing cross into the danger area, the ball was handled to give the girls a penalty. Katie M placed the ball and slotted home the spot kick into the bottom left corner of the net, to ease the pressure. The girls then worked tirelessly to see the game out, which they did.
Many thanks to all the parents for your support, I think the girls put on a good performance for you after so many weeks with no football at all.
Thanks to Alan for refereeing so well as always and setting up the pitch etc.
Thanks for running the line Martin.
Proud of you all girls.
