Todays game was the first of our three away trips in quick succession. It was a lovely morning for football and both teams duelly obliged with a very competative match played in a great spirit. Woodlands found themselves under the cosh from the off and had to cope with some very good wing play from Sherwood, who showed they would be a tough side to beat. Having ridden the early storm, Woodlands finally started to string some passes together, and created a few good opportunities but without threatening the goal. The best two chances of the half, fell to Lucy W, who lobbed an effort just wide and to Emily, who volleyed into a crowd of legs from a corner. With all 14 girls getting their chances today to shine, we had to dig in again early in the second half, when the defence were called into action on several ocassions to deal with constant Sherwood pressure. To their credit though, they put their heads in where it hurts a few times and dealt with the onslought which allowed us to break at pace on several occasions. More chances came as the half went on and both teams tired, Katie M wriggling through twice but saw efforts go wide of both posts. Eventually having gone to three at the back, the five across midfield proved too much for Sherwood and a good through ball from Katie W found Emily in the clear, to cooly slot past a very confident keeper.
Well done to both sides, Sherwood really were a tough side to beat today and gave a really spirited performance and proved again that this league will be a very strong one and from what we have seen any side can take points from each other. It was a great game to watch no doubt, even though the nerves were jangling a bit towards the end.
Thanks to their referee, who I thought was excellent today and to Alan for running the line for us, despite suffering with his back.
